Silk scarf with a three-dimensional pattern of circles formed by tiny dots.

This silk scarf has been decorated using the resist technique of tie and dye, known in western India as bandhani.

The process begins by stamping the chosen design onto the fabric as dots. In the case of large pieces with repeat patterns the cloth is previosuly folded in half or quarters.

Next with the piece sitting loose on the lap the tying begins. With the nail of the little finger or a metal spike, known as nakhaliya, the marked dots are pushed from underneath. A cotton thread is wound round the protruding fabric moving on uncut to tie the next dot and so on. Once all the dots have been tied the piece is dyed.

Depending on the final pattern the process may be repeated and the cloth dyed more than once, but the lightest colours must always be used first.

Accents of other colours can be applied by hand or dip dyed at different stages.

When the dyeing is completed the cloth is washed. Once dry the threads are removed revealing a pattern of little white rings with a tiny coloured centre where the yarn has prevented the dye from penetrating.

In India bandhani pieces are sold still tied up as proof that they are not printed imitations.

The tyeing is usually carried out by women while men do the dyeing.

Our bandhani pieces are designed by Kamaldeep Kaur, who works with master craftspeople to create outstanding pieces under the Neelgar label.

On this scarf the rings create a pattern of overlapping concentric circles on a copper orange ground, coloured with natural dyes. The fabric is a satin weave gajji silk that drapes beautifully.

The crinkled texture will be lost if the scarf is washed and ironed. To preserve it we recommend you simply air or dry clean the piece.
